Sydney Fringe Media Release
The Sydney Fringe’s ‘Toast of Newtown’ contest is open for voting (and tasting). The ‘Toast of Newtown’ cocktail competition has the bars of Newtown fighting for glory in the Sydney Fringe. And everyone’s a winner!

Sixteen local inner west bars, pubs and restaurants from Newtown, Enmore and Erskineville responded to the festival’s challenge to “capture Newtown in a glass”: to create a new cocktail that says it all about Sydney’s liveliest strip – in the best (and tastiest) way possible!

Each venue was allowed only one entry and responded with the most mouth-watering recipes.

The public can vote on-line until 17 September for their favourite cocktail and, of course, head to the heart of the Fringe to taste them first-hand. Finalists will enter the cocktail challenge on Friday 28 September from 7pm at Five Eliza, the Sydney Fringe festival bar.

On that night a panel of media, cocktail experts and a celebrity local personality will make the final choice based on taste, presentation and how well the drink has captured Newtown in a glass!

Participating venues include Kuki Tanuki, The Rose of Australia and Delhi o Dehli in Erskineville, the Bench Wine Bar and Bloodwood in South King Street, the Bank Hotel, Coopers Hotel, Madam Fling Flong, Black Sheep, The Wine Plate, Rubyos, Al Aseel and The Vanguard in North King Street and The Green Room, Hartsyard and Waterhorse Wine Bar in Enmore.

The magnificent concoctions include “Rosemary’s Baby”, “The Newtownian Goose Herder Special”, “Newtown Allsorts”, “The Bee’s Sting”, “The Cure” , “Dorothy’s Friend” and “Mayor Fowler” (named for the first female mayor of Newtown) – among many other inviting names… and recipes!

Sydney Fringe 2012 runs from 7 to 30 of September across 73 venues presenting more than 250 shows with an average ticket price of just $20.  Starting with a free street party at The Hub 5-10pm on 7 September, there are many free events from parties at the Fringe festival ‘club’ bar Five Eliza, to art shows and street fairs.

Theatre, music, cabaret, burlesque, visual arts, comedy – and a bunch of weird stuff! Plus big-name local and international headliners from Newtown to the Opera House, Darlinghurst to the west.
